Conquer: Check in with your goals for increased success!

It’s been a week into 2020 – how incredible is that?! The first 7 days of the year, of the decade will officially be coming to a close today. And the time to CONQUER is now!

The last few days have got me thinking about a belief that was anchored in for me during my high school days.

“Conquer the morning, conquer the day.”

I didn’t think too much of it at the time, only that I knew that if I started the day off right, the rest of the day was sure to follow. I figured it had something to do with the knowledge that if I didn’t do anything else that day, at least I did ONE THING to be better than I was the day before. Or perhaps it was because there was less pressure to make the day about something because I had already done something. 

It was only after I started translating this belief into other contexts such as

Conquer the Sunday, conquer the week

Or

Conquer the First, conquer the month/year 

… that I started to really wonder. Why is it that this belief was so true in my life? Why is it that a productive morning almost always guaranteed the steady stream of productivity throughout the day? After some reflection I figured it out.

Momentum.

Or more specifically what I’ve come to start thinking of as Snowball Energy.

You know the feeling I’m talking about – when you get something small done and the act of getting it done propels you forward into doing more?

It’s a tried and true strategy to increase your productivity. We all thrive on the feeling of finishing something or accomplishing something.

It’s like a snowball rolling down a mountain. As it gains speed (*cough* momentum *cough*) it grows and starts pummelling down the mountainside faster and more powerfully than when it started. 

Your Momentum Energy works the same way. The snowball will keep growing as long as it’s moving, even if it only increases in size in small increments at a time.  So let’s keep the snowball rolling. 

Did you conquer this first week of the year?! Was it filled with massive action? Regardless of whether you answered yes or no, it’s time for a check in. 

Conquer January, Conquer the Year – let’s build this foundation for your best year yet! 

Spend some time now (or carve out some time in the next 24 hours) to go through these exercises with me. Tony Robbins emphasises the importance of never leaving the site of setting a goal without taking an action toward it. Let’s start cultivating your Momentum Energy now. Choose to start TODAY.

Pull out a pen and paper (or a place where you can write out your thoughts) and go through the following exercises.

1. What goals did you set for yourself this year?

If you haven’t already gone through my Year in Review exercise you can do so here. Even if it’s already into the year, it’s a great step by step walkthrough that will help you get clear on the highs, lows and gaps that will help propel you forward. 

Use this time to really think about the goals that you’ve set for yourself this year. Are they SMART goals? Do you know WHY you want to achieve these goals? 

2. Are you emotional enough? If not, it’s time to dig deep.

Being emotional is often seen as a negative thing. But I’ve found that attaching emotions to your goals is the ONLY way that you can continue to stoke the fire that turn POSSIBILITIES into INEVITABILITIES. 

For each of the goals that you wrote about in Part 1, write a sentence or two describing what achieving that goal would mean for you. How would achieving it change your life? What about the lives of the people around you? 

Once you’ve gone through the benefits, now take a minute to think of all the negative consequences to your life and to the lives of those around you if you didn’t achieve that goal. 

3. Name your actions.

Choose ONE thing you can do today, TWO things you can do this week and THREE things you can do in the next fortnight that will bring you closer to achieving your goal.

Once you’ve filled out your table, it’s time to go DO. Focus first on getting your TODAY actions out of the way. Remember, building your Snowball Energy is all about adding small increments to your Snowball. As your Snowball grows bigger by the more actions you take, the more power, the more energy and the more action you will be able to take. 

For your WEEK and FORTNIGHT goals make sure you block out some time in your calendar. Set a reminder on your phone. Get an accountability buddy. Do WHAT IT TAKES to get it done.
